API or Application Programming Interface is an Interface which allows the user to access information from another service and allows the user to integrate this service on their own application. The API can be used by application developers or engineers, to add services from another application to their application, this can be used to drastically increase the amount an application can do. There is a huge amount of data available from other services, and most of it is available to everyone. APIs can be found and used for both mobile applications and web application, depending on the application it may also be used cross platform.
As an example Application programming interfaces can be used to integrate the services of another application or service such as facebook, on your own app, such as allowing users on your app to be able to post comments on the facebook service via your app. Usually application programming interfaces are free, however sometimes it does cost a fee to be able use and it can also have limitations in terms of data restrictions or other restrictions. Facebook is one of the most common services used inside other applications because facebook has made it so that that their service can easily be used with other applications.
